As far as I have experienced ,there is no difference between original edition and steam edition. And since this software's price is cheaper in steam for my country, I got it. If the same terms apply for you I highly recommend getting it.

It's good but not very useful by itself. You should get an engine (Stockfish is great and free) and at least one big database (Caissabase is a free one, but it's not better than Mega Databases).
You also can't escape from tutorials if you're new to chess
